24 hours left to book for Tony Abbott and Emancipation Day

Record roll-up, but can still fit a few more

Dear ,

Just a quick note that there is still time to book for our Emancipation Day breakfast with Hon Tony Abbott AC, but only just. Bookings close on Monday night.

You can book by clicking here. For AIP members it is $65 for a hot breakfast and a presentation by Hon Tony Abbott AC. We also have a rate for pensioners and students of $60.

Emancipation Day is an annual commemoration of when the Abolition of Slavery Act 1833 came into effect. It was the culmination of decades of work by mostly evangelical Anglicans who believed that everyone had equal dignity and worth and that therefore slavery was wrong.

This was a novel concept - slavery was common in most civilisations before that.and was possible because most civilisations did not regard people as inherently equal. It is this belief that makes liberal democratic societies so powerful and so successful.

So this event has ramifications well-beyond the slave trade itself, particularly as the British used their navy and unparalleled global dominance, to try to stamp the practice out worldwide. This wasn't just "virtue signalling".

And don't forget the details.
