Emancipation Day: A special surprise before John AndersonDear , This year’s Emancipation Day breakfast combines two things we value: great ideas and great music. Not only will you have the chance to hear from Hon John Anderson, but internationally acclaimed baritone and founder of the new Brisbane Lyric Opera, Henry Pinder will lead our traditional rendition of Amazing Grace. The hymn will be performed to a specially written arrangement by Brisbane composer and political commentator Alexander Voltz. Newton’s hymn talks of human failure, repentance and forgiveness. Amazingly, one of the verses was not actually written by him but came down in oral tradition from slaves in the American South, and it is every bit as good as the ones Newton himself wrote. One thing I’ve learned from John Anderson is that combining the arts with intellectual discussion raises it to a higher plane.
