Alzheimer’s and free enterprise – two good reasons to come to the 2021 McIlwraith Lecture

Perry Bartlett has made this world better for those of us touched by brain disease

One good reason to come to this year’s McIlwraith Lecture is to hear from, and celebrate, the achievements of Professor Perry Bartlett in his work on Alzheimer’s disease.

Perry’s work on this disease is what suggested him as an appropriate lecturer, given that most of us will have some brush with it, either ourselves, or through a close friend or relative.

His work on understanding the brain has advanced our understanding of Alzheimer’s and he has been in the forefront in trialling treatments. This is an opportunity to honour and publicise that work, amongst all the other things that Professor Bartlett has done.

Another good reason is to support Queensland’s only free enterprise think tank. This lecture is our major fundraiser, and it will contribute to our continuing work on issues vital to Queenslanders.

In the last year we have fought a number of battles, and I’d just like to highlight a few.

  • We took the Electoral Commission to court for its anti-democratic attempt to ban donations from property developers to organisations like ours.
  • Home ownership gives Australians security in life, and a stake in the country, yet young Australians are being frozen out because of the difficulties of saving a deposit. We’ve been lobbying for them to be able to access their superannuation savings to bridge the deposit gap.
  • COVID-19 has dramatically affected all our lives. In May we ran an international seminar with Professor Paul Frijters of the London School of Economics, resulting in a campaign for improved governance in handling this and future pandemics.
  • The Palaszczuk government is one of the most secretive this country has. They even refused to do forward projections in their budget up-date, so we did them for them. We also commissioned work to reveal the problems and cost-overruns in Cross River Rail (a project which wastes enough money to pay for 5 extra hospitals like the new one on the Gold Coast).

We would love to see you at this function, and we are offering table discounts to encourage you to bring your friends.
