Nuclear: are we almost there yet?

Exploring a central election issue with two of Australia's foremost nuclear experts

Dear ,

Peter Dutton has courageously put nuclear energy on the agenda. Our polling shows it is the issue he is most closely identified with, meaning it will be central to this election campaign. The opposition to it has been ferocious, driven by Chris Bowen, the energy minister, and the renewable energy lobby in the form of the Teals (so-called "community independants"), and also the Greens.

Our next function is your opportunity to bone up on the current state of the nuclear debate. We will have Australia's premier nuclear expert, former CEO of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) Adi Paterson, in conversation with Brisbane's premier nuclear expert, Professor Stephen Wilson. To book click here.

Adi Paterson has run our Australian Lucas Heights reactor, as well as being involved in reactor development in South Africa. While Australia struggles with the concept of even building one nuclear power station, South Africa already has one of 1.86 GW capacity, and is looking to more than double capacity, with tenders out for another reactor with 2.5 GW of capacity.

Adjunct Professor Stephen Wilson from the University of Queensland is also incredibly knowledgeable in this area and wrote the paper for "What would be required for nuclear energy plants to be available in Australia from the 2030s" for the University of Queensland.

We expect this event to occur in the middle of the federal election campaign, making it an important opportunity to get yourself across the facts so you can convince doubters to change their minds.

If we get the results wrong at this election the situation for our power generation system, and hence our whole way of life, will be dire. Current policies cannot work, and Dutton's plan is the only one that will.
