Australian Grand Strategies in a Time of Real or Imagined War

Are these the most insecure times since 1939?

Dear ,

I don't know about you, but I think our guest speaker may have been erring on the conservative side when he referred to "imagined wars". There are more than enough real ones at the moment for my liking, with a few more imaginable ones as well.

Peter Layton is a retired Wing Commander who has made a study of war, including grand strategies and network warfare. He will be speaking at a lunch we are hosting at the Brisbane Club on November 14. To book click here.

Australia is woefully unprepared for any sort of conflict, unless the USA is prepared to come to our aid. Even then our ability to contribute is limited after decades of ineffective defence policy from both sides of politics.

Peter Layton, is a Visiting Fellow at the Griffith Asia Institute and is an Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute in London. He worked at the Pentagon where he was awarded the US Secretary of Defense’s Exceptional Public Service Medal.

Countries use grand strategies to try to create a better future. They are most important for nations that have only limited money, people and material and so must focus them on the truly essential, not the frivolous.

Peter's book, Grand Strategies will also be on sale at the lunch.
