Court appearance today: Australian Institute for Progress v Electoral Commission Queensland

10:00 am Court 13, Justice S Brown

We will be in the Supreme Court of Queensland by 10:00 am this morning for the hearing of our application for a declaration against a ruling of the ECQ. If you wish to talk to us we will be at the court around 10 minutes beforehand.

The hearing is listed for Court 13 in front of Justice S Brown.

The case is important for all community and not-for-profit organisations in Queensland that publicly advocate for policy positions.

It is to determine whether the AIP is able to receive financial support, including their attendance at paid functions, including lunches, dinners and seminars, from people who are described as “property developers” in the legislation.

We currently do - our chair is a major Queensland property developer and we operate from premises owned by a property developer who has only one project and is primarily a farmer and investor - and if we can’t receive support like this, neither can a wide-range of community organisations, including welfare, environment, and church organisations.

The state government obviously views it seriously and the State Attorney-General has notified us that she will intervene in the proceedings. Crown Law also appears to believe that the other state attorneys-general may want to intervene as well.
