Nigel Biggar, author of Colonialism: A Moral Reckoning
Dear ,
Three weeks to go and places are filling-up nicely for our Emancipation Day breakfast on August 1, so don't put off booking. This is a groundbreaking event that will become an annual celebration of the beginning of the modern era of universal human rights. To book, please click here.
While I knew something about the British Abolition of slavery I didn't appreciate how significant it was until I heard Emeritus Professor Nigel Biggar being interviewed by Jordan Peterson on the subject.
I've since bought his book, Colonialism: A Moral Reckoning and I know a lot more.
Professor Biggar is an Anglican priest, a theologian and ethicist. After holding a number of senior academic positions he became Regius Professor of Moral and Pastoral Theology at Oxford University.
He is also the author of 10 books. Here are a few titles which suggest he is heterodox compared to most Anglican clergy.
* Good Life: Reflections on What We Value Today (1997) * Burying the Past: Making Peace and Doing Justice After Civil Conflict (2001) * Aiming to Kill: The Ethics of Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide (2003) * Religious Voices in Public Places (2009)[26] * In Defence of War (2013) * What's Wrong with Rights? (2020)
In 2017 he started an Ethics and Empire project at Oxford University, and the fruits of that project are on display in Colonialism.
Professor Biggar speaks with great clarity and courage. As you can imagine there were attempts to cancel him because of his academic work on empire which might have destroyed a less principled academic. Instead he was awarded a CBE. We are fortunate to have him as our speaker via video link.
Tickets are $60 for AIP members, which includes a hot breakfast, with discounts for students. Venue is Tattersall's club and breakfast will start at 7:00 for 7:30 am. To book click here.
Look forward to seeing you at this landmark event.
