Emancipation Day - book now

Be part of a landmark event

Emancipation_Day

Dear ,

I've now sorted-out the details of our breakfast to celebrate the Slavery Abolition Act 1833 on the anniversary of when it came into effect -  August 1st 1834. To book, please click here.

Emancipation Day is celebrated in a number of countries touched by slavery, but why should we celebrate it in Australia?

Here is just one reason.

We are the heirs of a culture which is criticised, sometimes rightly, and more frequently wrongly, for abuses of human rights on a global scale. Yet there is no more important right than the dignity of every single human being. The British Empire not only recognised this through legislation 190 years ago when it abolished the right to own another human being, but it then spent the next centuries trying to eliminate slavery.

This is a fundamental change of attitude and ushers in the modern era where the liberal concept of rights became the international norm. The AIP proudly stands in this tradition.

It seems that we are always saying what we are against. Here is an opportunity to say what we are for.

We have been fortunate to attract an international speaker on the subject - Emeritus Professor Nigel Biggar, whose 2023 book Colonialism: A Moral Reckoning lays out the good and the bad about the British Empire and colonialism in general. Professor Biggar will be beamed in from his home in Oxford.

And there's more. The breakfast will be broadcast on ADH TV, and Damian Coory, the presenter of The Other Side will moderate the event and interview Professor Biggar. Damian is also an AIP director.

Tickets are $60 for AIP members, which includes a hot breakfast, with discounts for students. Venue is Tattersall's club and breakfast will start at 7:00 for 7:30 am. To book click here.

Look forward to seeing you at this landmark event.

Regards,
GRAHAM YOUNG
