Go Nuclear or Go Extinct: Lunch and Panel Discussion

Zion Lights has 'escaped' from Extinction Rebellion to be an advocate for nuclear

Dear ,

I thought you might be interested in a function that we are running in Brisbane with Zion Lights, the former Extinction Rebellion UK spokesperson who has converted to being a pro-nuclear campaigner.

We’ve been lucky enough to arrange a lunch to be addressed by her and also by Professor Stephen Wilson on October 5, starting at 12:00 for 12:30 pm.

Stephen is the author of the UQ paper “What would be necessary for nuclear power plants to be operational in Australia by the 2030s”.

The aim of the function will be to increase understanding of what the shape of a decarbonised power system should be, as well as to explore the emotional barriers to accepting that nuclear has to be part of the solution.

Zion is a young hip single mum who is a first generation Brit of Punjabi heritage – she can connect with the younger demographics so crucial to win political debates. Stephen can explain the ins and outs of power generation from both the engineering and the economics perspectives. Together they make a complete rhetorical package.

I don’t need to tell you that it’s urgent the political and expert classes, as well as the public more broadly, understand that the decisions we make about power generation now will affect us for generations to come. Bad decisions will have bad outcomes for a long time, strategic as well as economic.

This function is designed to reach out to the wider Brisbane business and professional community. It would be an ideal one to bring “nuclear curious” or “nuclear skeptical” friends and colleagues to, if you are in Brisbane.

The function is October 5, at 12:00 for 12:30 pm. Cost is $135 for Australian Institute of Progress members, or $165 for non-members. We also have a price for tables of 10 ($1,350) and students ($120). To book, click here.

If you’re not in Brisbane but know someone who is and who could be interested, please pass this invitation on to them.

Regards,

GRAHAM YOUNG
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
