Halloween treat with Nigel Biggar

All treat no tricks

Dear ,

In the Christian calendar October 31 is All Hallow's Eve, or Halloween, the day before All Saints, the day to remember those who have died in the faith. So it is an appropriate day to be exploring an historical subject, Colonialism, which deals with our cultural predecessors (some of them even saints in the broad sense of the word).

If you have read Professor Biggar's book you will know that while early colonialism was primarily a side-effect of international commerce, much British colonial activity in Africa in the 19th century was driven by efforts to wipe out the slave trade, and this in turn was driven by missionaries. So there was a religious element to it.

Professor Biggar will be talking to us at lunch this Thursday in the United Services Club. There are still some spaces left. To book click here.
