July functions

Dear ,

We have two seminars and a policy discussion launch coming-up in the next fortnight. You know about one of them, but the other two will be new to you. I also wanted to let you know about a dialogue being held by one of our friends on the idea of a Universal Basic Income (a fashionable, but very  bad, idea).

Historic crashes and how this one is different

Dr Peter Jonson, reformed central banker, and historian of economics will be delivering a talk tomorrow evening on the history of financial crashes, and how this one differs. Peter is the genius behind the Henry Thornton website, and could have been governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia at one stage.

The seminar is online, tomorrow at 6:00 pm. To book click here.

Professor Tony Makin and Hon Kate Carnell: where does the economic response to COVID-19 leave us?

In this instalment of AIP’s COVID19: Causes, Consequences, and Cures Seminar Series, we will be bringing the expertises of Professor Tony Makin and Hon Kate Carnell together to explore the good and the bad of the economic measures we have taken. Both Prof Makin and Ms Carnell have a wealth of experience in public policy and have used this to call upon the government for greater reform. We will be focusing on issues such as ‘what inefficiencies have we introduced into our recovery’, ‘who has been disadvantaged’, and ‘what do we do now’.

The seminar is online, Monday June 20, at 12:30 pm - so this is a lunchtime event. To book click here.

Climate Energy Policy Paper launch with Tom Biegler

Join us for a discussion on how nuclear is the only practical solution to our current energy problem. The biggest problem with energy policy is too many economists, and not enough engineers. What works in economic theory doesn't necessarily work in practice. Tom Biegler, the author of this policy is definitely an engineers, and is a former CISRO Division Head.

The launch is online Monday June 13 at 6:00 pm. As it is a policy launch it will be free, but bookings are still required. To book click here.

The Brisbane Dialogues: Universal Basic Income

AIP member Murray Hancock is the man behind The Brisbane Dialogues. Designed as a contest of ideas, TBD aims to become a civilising force in a modern world where opponents are more inclined to throw stones than to debate ideas. They have an impressive panel to discuss the idea of a Universal Basic Income which includes Professor Gigi Foster (UNSW and ABC), John Humphreys (UQ and an AIP fellow), Simon Cowan (CIS) and Greg Marston (UQ).

The dialogue is Monday July 20, 7:00 pm at the Tivoli Theater, Fortitude Valley (same day as Tony Makin and Kate Carnell, but in the evening).

To book click here and use the code "AIP"  to get a 10% discount.

Conclusion

We've got more in the pipeline, so if I don't see you at these, I'm sure I'll see you at something else. I'm looking forward to when we're all back from COVID, and we can gather in person at 50 Logan Road.

Regards,

Graham Young
Executive Director
