Two must attend functions coming up in July

We have two functions this month: the inaugural Sir Thomas McIlwraith lecture on July 29 and the Brisbane launch of the The Charity Ball written by institute director Gary Johns on July 14.

So please book now:

Sir Thomas McIlwraith Lecture

The Sir Thomas McIlwraith Lecture is an annual event to celebrate contributions to Queensland's growth that show outstanding initiative and enterprise. It is named after an early premier of the state who was responsible for a number of visionary infrastructure projects, such as ports and railways.

Wagners is a family owned construction and development business, started in 1989. The Brisbane West Wellcamp airport was developed in 2014, taking just 12 months from approval to completion.

While Sydney continues to discuss options for a second airport, Brisbane now has one thanks to individual initiative and private capital. Wellcamp is the first greenfields airport capable of taking large passenger aircraft since Avalon, Melbourne, in 1953. It remains the only one built by private capital.

Wagners' success in Toowoomba represents the spirit and achievement the Australian Institute of Progress seeks to honour with the Sir Thomas McIlwraith Lecture. The institute exists to foster philosophies and policies that unlock the potential in each individual Australian. John Wagner is a fitting speak for the inaugural lecture.

Book launch: The Charity Ball

Too many charities in Australia do little or no charity work, too many receive most of their income from government, and too many lobby government for more. Gary Johns analyses the charity sector and concludes that a better informed donor is essential to drive better charity.
