Without modern civilisation people will die

Dear ,

As a think tank we've taken a position in the "climate wars". CO2 is a greenhouse gas, and all other things being equal, it will warm the earth. But all other things aren't equal, and even if it does warm the earth, what is the best policy response?

We also know that there is a straight-line relationship between power consumption and civilisation, and what looks like an exponential relationship between civilisation and good health and longevity. If you destroy our power infrastructure, or damage it significantly, the cost will be lives lost.

Yet by attempting to deal with climate change using mitigation based on unreliable energy rather than relying on technological advances and adaptation our access to reliable and affordable power is at risk. This has human consequences beyond cost and inconvenience.

Worse, many of the claims made for and about climate change are wrong, and are used to cultivate an atmosphere of hysteria to stampede populations into politically favoured "solutions".

This is the case that Professor Ian Plimer prosecutes in his new book Green Murder: A Life Sentence of Net Zero With No Parole, which we will be launching in Brisbane this Sunday, 3:00 pm at the home of James and Patrice McKay, 34 Howard Street, Paddington. To book, click here.

Ian Plimer is Emeritus Professor in Geology at Melbourne University, as well as a prolific author. His book Heaven and Earth, Global Warming: The Missing Science was a best seller. And he had a shot at the education sector in How To Get Expelled From School: A Guide To Climate Change For Parents, Pupils and Punters.

Apart from a successful academic career, Professor Plimer has been active in business and is currently on a number of boards, including some associated with Mrs Gina Rinehart.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Regards,

GRAHAM YOUNG
