Invented state high schools in Australia
Dear ,
He left school at 13, but still managed to rise to be Sydney's leading barrister. As PM his most significant piece of legislation was the Conciliation and Arbitration Act, but he led the Free Trade Party.
As Minister for Public Instruction he instigated Public Secondary Schools, Technical Colleges, and the provision of evening lectures at the university.
His father was a Presbyterian minister and he himself was described as "the best platform speaker in Europe" (an interesting description of an Antipodean).
This is just a gentle nudge that Luke Walker (now a barrister like Reid) is launching his short biography of Sir George (KCMG) this Friday.
