McIlwraith and election

Still need takers for McIlwraith, and what's happening on the ground

Dear ,

I wanted to up-date you on the election, plus the McIlwraith Lecture. As you can see below the ALP’s third-party campaign using the unions is pretty thuggish, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be effective - moving the vote just one per cent in their favour could pay big dividends.

It justifies our decision to be involved in this election to point out the failings of Labor’s policies as well as to offer some solutions of our own to any party that wants to use them.

Thanks to those of you who’ve made a donation. It will make a big difference to our effort.

McIlwraith

While the McIlwraith lecture is not a fundraiser for election spending, it does help to keep the rest of our organisation going so that we are in a position to run campaigns and develop policy solutions.

If you haven’t booked, please think about it, and ask your friends. The date is October 16, the venue Victoria Park Golf Club, time 7:00 for 7:30 pm. To book click here.

At the moment we have two student scholarship tables – thanks Bob and Cliff – it would be great if we could get one or two more.

The Sinnathamby/Springfield story is an inspiring one, particularly at a time when a whole generation is starting to give up on the idea of home ownership.

Election campaign

I’ll share our material with you as it goes out but first I’m going to share some of the examples of materials from the unions. There are now 17 of them and they can spend around one million dollars each.

I’ll set up a page on our website where we will have images of any materials you send in, but in the meantime you can click on the links below to see some specific examples.

ALP Positive campaign

The early material was a positive campaign for the sitting member. You can see examples from:

but that was just to prove they are "nice" people. Now the haymakers are coming.

ALP Negative campaign

The ALP and their associates seem to be recycling the same material and ideas as previous elections. “Mediscare” has moved from the federal realm and been rebadged as an LNP plan to sell-off public hospitals, while Campbell Newman, nine years gone and not even a member of the LNP, is allegedly still pulling the strings.

While these attacks look ridiculous to us, the ALP is betting that if even one per cent of the public buys them they may save the furniture, and maybe even the house. The electoral mathematics says the LNP needs around 54% of the vote just to win. It’s a big ask.

If you can help our campaign with a donation please either email me graham.young@aip.asn.au, or go straight to our donation page.

One last thing

I’ll be on a panel at the Australian Professional Government Relations Association tomorrow evening discussing the state election with former CM editor David Fagan and Dr Paul Williams from Griffith University, moderated by Kate Banville. It will be at the Brisbane Club, starting at 6:00 pm. To book, click here. You do not need to be a member of the association to attend.

Regards,

GRAHAM YOUNG
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
