One year ends and another begins
Dear ,
2020 felt like a Gap Year, and 2021 was like wasting your first year at uni for a GPA a bit less than 4. But that’s not going to stop us finishing the year in a gallop, and saddling up for what we hope will be a more normal year next year. We have two functions left for this year, and we start again in '22 on February 2, the week after Australia Day, with the postponed launch of Cancel Culture by Tony Abbott, followed by two more functions in the month (and another possible). The complete list is: Book Launch: Keith DeLacy, A Philosophical Journey Thursday November 18, 12:00 for 12:30 pm at the Brisbane Club. Cost $120 a head. If you intend to come please let me know as soon as you can. Because this is a joint function with the Brisbane Club we’re not using our usual booking system. To RSVP please email me at info@aip.asn.au. Book Launch and Christmas Party: When Chairmen Were Patriots Friday December 2, 6:00 for 6:30 pm at AIP headquarters, Unit 2B 50 Logan Road. Cost $25 a head ($15 concessions). The author, Elizabeth Fysh, an AIP member, has written this book about Fergus McMaster, founder and chairman of Qantas. The flying kangaroo didn’t always seem destined to fly, and the book details the ups and downs from its founding in 1920 to its nationalisation in 1947. To book either email me, or click on this link. Book Launch: Cancel Culture Wednesday February 2, 2022, 12:00 for 12:30 pm at the Brisbane Club. Tony Abbott will do the honours. This one has been anticipated for so long I’m sure you know the details by heart. Cost is $165 a head (discount of $30 for AIP members). To book email me or click on this link. Book Launch: The Great Covid Panic: What Happened, Why, and What To Do Next Friday February February 11, 2022, 6:00 for 6:30 pm at AIP Headquarters. Cost $25 a head ($15 concessions). To be launched by Gigi Foster, one of the authors, with Paul Fritjers, one of the other authors probably attending via Zoom. We have been involved with Gigi and Paul on a variety of COVID projects, and are proud to be associated with this launch. To book email me. EventBrite booking will be available shortly. Date claimer: Green Murder Sunday February 20, 2022, further details to be advised. Professor Ian Plimer will launch his latest book sometime on Sunday afternoon. When we have organised a format, venue and price we will get back to you. In the meantime… If you’re after some light reading, I’ve had a couple of articles in the Spectator over the last month, one of which builds on our research. You can read them republished on our own On Line Opinion. · Why what our kids are taught could be a vote changer
· Trying to duck the climate fight has made the next election harder for the Coalition
· Net zero needs nuclear power, Prime Minister
AIP Fellow, Jeffrey Wall, CBE, has been posting some insightful and effective articles on Australia’s relationship with the area. Jeffrey believes that Australia has to raise its level of involvement in the Indo-Pacific region, where we are the natural great power. · Australia needs to support Andrew Forrest's energy ambitions for Papua New Guinea
· Glasgow confirms Australia's South Pacific influence has never been weaker, and China's never stronger
· How Australia can regain positive influence and respect in the South Pacific
· Telstra's decision to acquire Digicel's South pacific operations welcome – and challenging
Jeff’s work has been reported in the Australian Financial Review and the ABC amongst other mainstream media outlets. Hope to see you at one or both of our next two functions.
Kind regards,
Graham Young Executive Director
