Our January 2025 polling

A close election, but better to be Peter Dutton

Dear ,

We conducted one of our qualitative polls through our publication On Line Opinion in January. You can download it by clicking here.

The  next election looks like a near-run thing on these numbers. While there is an expectation that the Coalition is more likely to win than Labor it is not really borne out by the figures.

It is definitely a cost-of-living election, with the cost of housing and electricity in particular being issues for a large number of voters. Nuclear power is definitely an issue, but there are sharp divisions over it, and from Peter Dutton's point of view it overwhelms any other policy positions he might have. That might make him seem uninterested in the plight of every day Australians if they don't see the connection between nuclear and high power prices.

Coalition voters and nationalists continue to be concerned about government spending, to which they have added immigration. The issue of greatest concern to Labor, Greens and Independents appears to be climate change.

While the media today is full of stories of anti-Semitism and domestic terrorism, this is mostly an issue with Coalition and Nationalist voters.

This is only half the survey. I also polled a number of issues separately and will report on them later. Look out for more emails.
