Dear ,

Happy New Year, and welcome to the first function of the AIP for this year. The federal government has announced an unprecedented immigration campaign with virtually no public discussion. We don't think this is good enough.

So we've invited two experts on population and population policy to discuss the pros and cons from two different sides.

This event will be a lunch at the Brisbane Club on February 2, 2023, with Don O'Rorke and Dr Jane O'Sullivan. To book, click here.

Don O'Rorke is a 40 year veteran of Queensland property development ranging from Cooktown down to near-Coolangatta Casuarina Beach, and a lot in between. He is currently developing the $850 billion Yerongpilly Green. Known for his innovative and thoughtful approach to development he is the perfect advocate for a bigger Australia.

Dr Jane O'Sullivan is a multi-disciplinary researcher in population at the University of Queensland, and a co-convenor of The Overpopulation Project. She has done extensive work in developing countries and her research covers the environmental, social, micro- and macro-economic impacts of population growth, and the efficacy of policy and program options addressing it.

This will be a moderated discussion. The aim is to foster better understanding of the issues. Our own policy work suggests that many of the economic and social claims on both sides of the argument are overstated. Other policy work suggests that an ambitious immigration program coupled with such severe housing affordability problems will only make affordability worse. On the other hand a small Australia lacks economies of scale and is geopolitically vulnerable.
