COVID restrictions and mandates alienated almost half the Liberal base
Dear , We have done follow-up qualitative research on our last federal poll to see if we can pinpoint the role that COVID-era policies may have played in it. The mystery in the rise of One Nation and the implosion of the Coalition is that it is happening everywhere, not just in the traditional hotspots for One Nation of Queensland and mining areas in New South Wales and Western Australia. And One Nation is at a level of support never before seen with a significant amount of this support being drawn straight from the Coalition parties. My hypothesis was that something deep had fractured the implicit deal that the Coalition had with its supporters, and that the only issue that could have gone close to causing that fracture was the policies that were implemented during COVID. Those policies represented the greatest peacetime deprivation of liberty through lockdowns and vaccine mandates, as well as the highest spending of any federal government outside wartime. One Nation was the only party to be consistently against lockdowns and mandates. Since then, One Nation has been the only party to speak out consistently about levels of immigration. All of these issues have led to the first street marches that I can recall from the right, so they obviously run deeply. Then there was the Bondi Beach massacre which exposed the lack of depth in the Prime Minister, and which resulted in the Anti-Semitism Bill. I said at the time of the bill being passed that it would give Pauline Hanson a boost, and the trend in the polls suggests I was right. Why? Because instead of enforcing existing laws against inciting violence it invented new laws censoring speech, and it was a joint Labor Coalition project, reinforcing the narrative of an establishment and a uni-party oblivious to the wishes of average Australians. What we did in our latest research was repoll our respondents and asked them a question on COVID and then check for correlations. To see the details of what we found click here. Kind regards,
