Olympics infrastructureNext Tuesday we will be cohosting a panel discussion on “SEQ's infrastructure challenges and opportunities toward 2032”. This is in partnership with the Northern Metropolitan Division of the LNP. Panellists are: The seminar will start at 6:30 and finish by 8:30 and be held at Brothers Rugby Union Club, Crosby Road, Albion. There is a charge of $10 per head and some refreshments will be provided. There will also be a cash bar. I will be moderating the panel discussion, and I’d have to say I will be fascinated to hear what our panellists think about the next 6 and a half or so years until the Olympics. As you may be aware, I’ve been glass half-empty on the Olympics from the beginning, but we have won them and need to make them work. That glass I’m looking at is an hour glass, and time is ticking away. To book click here. Tony Abbott and AustraliaThis is firstly a date claimer. We will be launching Tony Abbott’s history of Australia – Australia: How an ancient land became a great democracy on the evening of November 25. Details will be available as soon as I have them but write this down in your diary. I haven’t read the book yet (my copy is in the mail), but Geoffrey Blainey has. His review is glowing: Tony Abbott should be congratulated ... This history of Australia is vivid, readable, provocative Geoffrey Blainey, historian You can order a book from us autographed by Mr Abott by clicking here. Tony is the first former Australian PM to attempt a history of Australia, and it puts him in a select global group of former PMs. The only comparable effort I can find is Winston Churchill who wrote the four volume History of the English-Speaking Peoples. I’m hoping that this book can help to rescue our side of politics in a similar way that Menzies’ The Forgotten People did in the 40s by setting out not just facts, figures, and stories, but a vision as to what the country is. If you want to get a sense of the book Sky News will be airing a documentary based on it over three nights at 7:30 pm starting tonight and continuing over Tuesday and Wednesday, or you can stream it from here. Buy Australia as a Christmas gift - the more copies the cheaperWhat could be better than a copy of Tony Abbott’s Australia (or our republished Reflections On the African Slave Trade) to give your children, grandchildren or younger friends for Christmas? One of the problems on our side of politics is that we don’t tell our stories, or if we do, we do it poorly. That’s one reason why the AIP runs an online book shop as well as our many functions commemorating the achievements of individuals in western society. So this Christmas, why not take the stress out of shopping and buy everyone you know a copy. To make this even easier, we are offering volume discounts. The first copy of Australia you buy is at full retail. If you buy two you get 10% off your whole order. For three that rises to 15% and for four and more 20%. That’s a saving of $40 per order. The same also applies to our Reflections On the African Slave Trade, the emarkable tract written by John Newton, the composer of Amazing Grace, which was a best-seller in its time and influential in pushing the abolitionist cause along. You can buy Australia from this link; and Reflections, from this. But don’t delay, orders must be in by December 1 to ensure delivery for Christmas. Hope to see you at the McIlwraith, our infrastructure seminar, or the Tony Abbott book launch. And looking to be knocked over in the rush for Australia. Kind regards, GRAHAM YOUNG EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE FOR PROGRESS
