Democracy and political ignorance: lecture next Monday

Dear ,

Next Monday Ilya Somin, Professor of Law at George Mason University, will deliver a lecture based on his book Democracy and Political Ignorance. He will then be interrogated by Professor Graeme Orr and AIP Academic Advisor, and Garrick Professor of Law, James Allan.

This lecture is being sponsored jointly by the AIP and the University of Queensland Law School, so it's important we get a good turn up. To book click here.

One of the biggest problems with modern democracy is that most of the public is usually ignorant of politics and government.

Widespread political ignorance is a major challenge for democracy, and is best mitigated by decentralizing and limiting government. People make better decisions when they choose what to purchase in the market or which state or local government to live under, than when they vote at the ballot box, because they have stronger incentives to acquire relevant information and to use it wisely.

Date: Monday May 16, 2016, 6:00 pm.
Venue: Supreme Court Library Conference Room, Level 12, 415 George Street, Brisbane Q 4000.
Cost: $30 ($20 for AIP and AACL members).
