Still some seats left
Dear ,
Peta Credlin has a great piece in today's Australian on Australia's money-go-round insanity on energy. We pay "renewable energy" producers to generate electricity; subsidise coal-fired power stations, whose business has been obliterated by renewables, to keep going, because renewables aren't fit for purpose; and then on top of that subsidise consumers because even after all of the above our power is still unaffordable.
In other signs of madness, the Queensland government is apparently considering the 2 GW Borumba Pumped Hydro scheme at a cost of $18 billion. This project would generate on average fewer than 12 hours per day, not produce any energy and only store it. The energy would be produced by a combination of either solar or wind. The cost of that, just to match the 2GW capacity of the dam, would be somewhere north of another $8 to $9 biliion.
These are simplified calculations, and probably on the cheap side. The current cost of a 2GW nuclear reactor in the US, which would produce electricity, not just store it, around 90% of the time, is about $18 Billion (according to the US government Energy Information Administration).
So there is plenty to think about, and plenty to ask our nuclear experts about.
