Dear ,

We've still got a few places left for our McIlwraith Lecture with Steve Baxter. (To book click here).

During the week it was brought home to me how much Australia needs to recapture the entrepreneurial spirit. At our panel discussion on SEQ, infrastructure, housing and the Olymics one of the panellists, Matt Mackey of Arcadis, showed a slide with this statistic on it.

In 2000 a construction worker in Queensland produced $544,000 per annum, by 2012 it had increased to $773,000, and in 2024 it had dropped to $228,000. This is a country that is resting on its laurels,  with less to boast about than it had a quarter of a century ago in 2000, and in steep decline since just over 10 years ago.

Our guest, Steve Baxter, is an incredibly hard worker with millions of dollars of output to his credit. The son of a railway worker in Central Queensland he founded PIPE Networks with Bevan Slattery and the result was a business worth $380 million in 2010 when Steve was 38 years of age.

Since then, Steve has become as well known for his generosity to budding entrepreneurs as for his own business successes. He founded River City Labs in 2012, created programs like Startup Catalyst to immerse young Queensland founders in Silicon Valley, and served four years as a “shark” on Shark Tank Australia. In 2018, he was appointed Queensland’s Chief Entrepreneur.

Today he is Co-founder and Executive Chairman of TEN13, a major startup investment platform, and Founder and Lead Investor at Beaten Zone Venture Partners, focusing on early-stage sovereign defence technology.

This is your last chance to book, so please don't delay.
