Get intimate with the founding of Qantas

Dear ,

Elizabeth Fysh has a personal interest in the history of Qantas. Her late husband Frith was related to both Sir Wilmot Hudson Fysh and Sir Fergus McMaster, two of the three founders of Qantas. That gave her unprecedented access to materials, including photographs, for her writing of When Chairmen Were Patriots, the story of McMaster.

She'll be sharing some of these treasures with us on Friday night, including many of the photographs. This will be an insight into Australia's history with more passion and intimacy than you usually get.

The creation of Qantas was as visionary, and revolutionary, in its time, as the creation of today's internet giants. Between November 16, 1909 when DELAG, which ran Zeppelins was started, and November 16, 1920 when Qantas came into existence, only 24 airlines were formed, most of them only in the period after 1918. So it was an early innovator.

The founders also built strongly. Of those 24, only 2 are still in operation - Qantas and KLM. How many of today's Internet brands will still be in business in 101 years' time?

This is a great story, and a fitting one to close our year on. If our institute exists for any purpose it is to work to ensure that the conditions are there for many more McMasters and Fyshs to emerge.

We still have some room left, and we'd love to see you. Click here to book for the event. To pre-order the book, please click here to go to our new online book store.
