Flood claims another victim
|
|
Dear ,
Flood has disrupted this function. As a result of a torrent of water that ran down Bartley's Hill at Ascot, and into the rear of her apartment on Racecourse Road, Emeritus Professor Kay Saunders will not be able to launch William Coleman's latest book Their Fiery Cross of Union: A Retelling of the Creation of the Australian Federation 1889-1914.
As a result Scott Prasser, formerly a professor of political science, and AIP member, and a senior fellow with the Centre for Independent Studies will now do the honours. I understand Scott has a different view of federation from William, as well as having considerable expertise in the area, so there should be some lively exchanges.
The federal system is one I think most of our members would support unlike most Australians who think, outside of sporting events like State of Origin, that it is an unnecessary encumbrance. Uniformity and consistency sound like great ideas, until you war game what having Daniel Andrews, or Mark McGowan as prime ministers of a unitary Commonwealth would do for national welfare rather than, say, Dominic Perrottet, or Scott Morrison. I'm sticking with federation, but maybe we could do it better than we do now.
This is a good opportunity to get a better understanding of the history of federation, as well as discussing how it might be done better.
