Media and newsDear , We've been hitting a few runs in February so far.Research in The Australian The biggest was the report of our qualitative polling in The Australian yesterday. This research is on Australians' retirement savings and attitudes to some of the policy changes proposed by the ALP. Banking Royal Commission A week ago the Spectator carried an article by me on the Hayne Royal Commission's findings. which you can read by clicking here. Possibly as a result of this article I've been asked to make a submission to the Senate Economics Legislation Committee on two inquiries. The first is the "Inquiry into the Banking System Reform (Separation of Banks) Bill 2019" and the second the "Inquiry into Commonwealth Registers Bill 2019; Business Names Registration (Fees) Amendment (Registries Modernisation) Bill 2019; Corporations (Fees) Amendment (Registries Modernisation) Bill 2019; National Consumer Credit Protection (Fees) Amendment (Registries Modernisation) Bill 2019; and Treasury Laws Amendment (Registries Modernisation and Other Measures) Bill 2019." I definitely intend to make a submission to the first, and know that we have some very distinguished bankers and others on this list who might like to offer some advice as well. Let me know if you do. I don't claim any expertise in the second inquiry, but if there is anyone who wants to make a submission under our banner I would be happy to talk to them about it. A thought We're in bush fire season, and extreme temperatures bear a lot of the blame, but this is weather, not climate, as the temperatures are always the effect of wind direction and the position of highs and lows. That hasn't stopped the usual suspects, including the Premier of Queensland, blaming climate change, which they in turn blame on the burning of fossil fuel. . The image below suggests that maybe CO2 plays a part, but not in the presumed way. Another explanation for the fires is fuel load - we don't burn off and clear as much as we have in the past, or as the Aborigines did before colonisation, so consequently there is more to burn. The CO2 fertilisation effect has been known for years, but we really didn't understand how powerful it is. This map from NASA shows greening in Eastern and Southern Australia of more than 16% per decade. That's got to be good news for earth, and should tell the state government they need to lift their game on vegetation management. They said they wanted more of it, and they can't complain now more has turned-up.
