Four functions, one submission and a round tableDear , A reminder that the John Anderson Emancipation Day breakfast is coming up on Thursday July 30, and notes about all the three other functions we have coming up in the next few months, as well as some of our recent activities. Low-carbon electricity generation Next Monday week (July 20), Tim Florin will speak to his paper “What do global data visualisations tell us about the performance of low-carbon electricity generation”. The paper will be launched by Drew Hutton. Drew, although a co-founder of the Australian Greens, was expelled from the party recently for saying that sex is a biological fact. He has also been working against the approvals for some wind and solar projects because of the damage they do to the environment and is open to the idea of nuclear energy. Drew is the sort of person Tim had in mind as a reader of his paper and his comments will be interesting. To book for the function, click here. Let’s just say it’s not what President Chris Bowen was hoping for. Security in the Pacific This is a date claimer: we will be holding another evening function, this time with Major General Mick Ryan. Mick will be talking about security in the Indo-Pacific, something which became a lot more topical yesterday with China’s launch of a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile into our region. Date is August 19. The venue is to be advised. Time will be 6:00 for 6:30 pm. Mick is the expert’s expert on these sorts of things, and you should look up his Substack Futura Doctrina. Will Witt This is another date claimer. Will Witt will be touring Australia at the end of August. Who is Will? Will is one of America’s best-known young conservative media voices, a former PragerU personality whose street interviews and cultural commentary have reached hundreds of millions of viewers. He is the author of How to Win Friends and Influence Enemies and Do Not Comply: Taking Power Back from America’s Corrupt Elite, and is now working on a new book. A college dropout who turned a camera, sharp questions, and political instinct into a national platform, Witt has become one of the more recognisable figures on America’s new media right. The date is August 24 and the evening will be in a lecture format. Submission to the Royal Commission into Antisemitism and Social Cohesion I have uploaded a copy of our submission to the Royal Commission which you can access from this page. Our submission concentrated on suggestions as to how to delimit the extent of antisemitism in the community. The Bondi Massacre didn’t occur because of antisemitism in the general community but came from a particular community. Without a proper focus on the source of antisemitism the commission will likely waste its time making recommendations on things like restricting speech on social media, which is where the hearings this week and last week appear to be heading, rather than deradicalisation and detection in communities with high levels of risk. International Health Reform Project On Friday June 26 we hosted a round table with Professor Emeritus Ramesh Thakur, of the Crawford School of Policy, ANU; Dr David Bell, formerly of the WHO, and Katie Ashby-Koppins of PJ O’Brien and Associates together with nine other participants to discuss reform of the international health system. The discussion was a serious attempt to think through how international health cooperation can be made more accountable, more sovereign, and less captive to bureaucratic momentum, using lessons learned from the COVID pandemic.
