Federal election 2016

Election update

Dear ,

We've just released the results of our first election survey. Our summary is that we are probably heading for another three years of stalemate. I don't want that to be true, but if it is, that means an even greater need for organisations like ours.

You can read our media release by clicking here, and the report can be downloaded from here. I also wrote an opinion piece based on the research entitled "Stick with the current mob for a while".

One of the things that differentiates us from most other think tanks is that we try to understand what voters think so we can explain our position better. This polling also gives you an opportunity to understand what is motivating Australians, and we will run a more detailed briefing on our polling after the election for those who are interested.

We will also be running an online exit poll on the day. This won't be to predict the result before the polls close, but so we can capture accurately the reasons that people had for voting the way they did when it was freshest in their mind. This kind of research is great for answering questions like "Did Campbel Newman lose because of asset sales?" (The answer is no, by the way).

We have also been active in the federal election, campaigning against changes to negative gearing. We will be releasing a paper tomorrow on housing affordability. Negative gearing is not one of the problems.

And while the Brexit campaign wasn't an Australian election it has probably sparked as much interest here as our own election. You may be interested in my analysis looking at lessons for the Australian political class from Brexit which we puhblished on our own On Line Opinion.

(If you are unfamiliar with On Line Opinion it is an open forum which, without public funding, does what the ABC is mandated to do, and doesn't - publish a broad range of material from all political and other points of view).

Kind regards,
