Guest Lecturer |
John Wagner, Chairman of Wagners, owners and developers of Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport in Toowoomba. Wagners is a family-owned business started in 1989. The Wellcamp Airport was developed last year and took twelve months from approval to completion. While Sydney is still trying to agree on the site of a second airport, Brisbane is there already as a result of individual initiative and private capital. Wellcamp is the first greenfields airport capable of taking large passenger liners since Avalon in 1953. And the only one built by private enterprise in Australia. Wagners’ success in Toowoomba represents the sort of progress the institute exists to foster by promoting philosophies and policies that unlock the potential in individual Australians. |
The Sir Thomas McIlwraith Lecture is an annual lecture to celebrate contributions to Queensland’s growth that show initiative and individual enterprise. Named after an early premier of Queensland who was responsible for a number of nation building projects such as railways and ports, the inaugural lecture will be held later this year.
