Ninth Sir Thomas McIlwraith Lecture with Maha Sinnathamby

Maha Sinnathamby will deliver the 9th McIlwraith Lecture: “Maha Sinnathamby: Against the Odds – how he built Australia’s first city since Canberra”.

From a $7.9 million investment in 1992 Maha Sinnathamby grew Australia’s first privately built city, Greater Springfield.

Few people can say they have not only conceived a city but built one.

Maha Sinnathamby can.

Born in Malaysia, he is the visionary and founder of Greater Springfield, Australia’s fastest emerging new city which in 2010 was declared World’s Best Master Planned Community by the International Real Estate Federation.

Declared as one of Queensland’s 50 greatest thinkers of all time by Newscorp in 2014, Maha Sinnathamby AM is one of Australia’s most iconic entrepreneurs.

Greater Springfield was also the winner of 2014 President’s Award at the Urban Development Institute of Australia Qld (UDIA) and has received similar awards on two other occasions.

Maha is committed to changing the community building paradigm by creating a sustainable, truly master-planned city where being able to live, learn, work and play is at the core of its architecture. He constantly reminds us that education is the currency of the future and is fundamental to Greater Springfield’s design.

From the original purchase of an unwanted 7000 acres in 1992 to a population of more than 50,000 today, by the end of this decade Springfield will be home to more than 100,000 people.

Both as a civil engineer and dedicated community builder, Maha has become a leading example of what can be achieved through persistence and planning.
