Celebrate PNG Independence Day with an analysis by former PM Hon Peter O’Neill of what PNG should contribute to the region.
Our speaker, Hon Peter O’Neill CMG, served as the seventh prime minister of Papua New Guinea between 2011 and 2019. Before entering parliament he was a partner in Pratley and O’Neill’s an accounting practice, president of the Papua New Guinea Institute of Certified Practicing Accountants, and Executive Director of the PNG Banking Corporation.
Unsurprisingly his term as prime minister saw a commitment to economic and social growth and modernisation stressing infrastructure development, introducing free education and free health care and raising the stature of PNG through the 2015 Pacific Games and the 2020 APEC Summit.
49 years after PNG gained its independence the regional situation has transformed with risks and opportunities neither Australia nor PNG could have seen at the time. We are privileged to be able to hear the views of someone who understands that situation from the point of view of our closest regional friend.
