Professor Perry Bartlett is a pioneer in studying brain plasticity and is the founder of the Queensland Brain Institute. His speech covered the challenges in establishing the institute, as well as the work he is currently doing on exercise and dementia. The professor is a member of the Order of Australia, and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science. In 2015 he was awarded the CLS Florey Medal. Since 2007 the QBI has grown from nothing to employ over 500 staff working in a variety or areas of brain research. The McIlwraith Lecture was founded in the name of a prominent colonial premier of Queensland who was a classical liberal and contributed significantly to the growth of Queensland as well as being one of the fathers of Federation. Each year we invite a prominent person who has made an entrepreneurial contribution to Queensland to deliver the lecture.
